Background Information
The incident involved a five storey building of brick and timber construction; public house on the ground floor, kitchen on the first and residential above. Kitchen equipment comprised high level grills and a small commercial oven. Fume extraction from the kitchen was via a steel hood with steel mesh filters leading to a 6 metre length of horizontal ducting located above a timber framed false ceiling and then to the open - see plan below. The extraction duct incorporated a pre-filter, carbon filter and extraction fan within its length. Access to this duct was poor.
